The service concerns the preparation of the executive design for the “Specialized technical support service for the extraordinary maintenance works for the replacement of safety barriers and expansion joints on the Carusa Viaduct on S.S. 626“. S.S. 626 della Valle del Salso is a major communication road that connects Caltanissetta and Gela, running predominantly within the territory of Nisseno.

For the project involving the removal of the existing barriers and installation of new ones, the selection of restraint devices was made in accordance with the provisions of the Ministerial Decrees dated 3.06.1998, 11.06.1999, 21.06.2004, 28.06.2011, taking into account the certification requirements. Regarding the destination (type of barrier to be installed), the selection was based on the test report (Crash Test) issued by accredited laboratories.

Depending on their destination and location, the barriers and other restraint devices used in this service can be classified into the following types:
a) Barriers for structures (viaducts): Edge Beam Barriers (BP)
b) Side Edge Barriers (BL)
c) Terminal
d) Transition from Edge Beam to Side Edge
e) Transition from Side Edge to Side Edge

The selection of devices also considered the actual physical spaces in which the barriers will be installed (coping dimension for edge beam destination).

Furthermore, the maintenance intervention in the project includes the complete removal of the existing coping, which exhibits deep longitudinal cracks on both the right and left sides, and the provision of a new coping with a minimum width of 65 cm. Additionally, the 9 expansion joints on the Carusa Viaduct will be removed and replaced.
